My name is Jingzhou Zhang, and I am a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) currently completing my practicum at Relationship Counselling Toronto. I am passionate about supporting immigrant individuals and couples who are adjusting to life in a new country and helping them build stronger, healthier relationships. My goal is to create a supportive space where clients can better understand themselves and their partners, learn to resolve disagreements with curiosity, repair hurt more quickly, and face life’s challenges as a team.

Moving to a new country can place significant strain on individuals and couples navigating unfamiliar cultural norms, language barriers, and reduced social support. It can lead to misunderstandings and conflicts within the relationship resulting in emotional disconnection and feeling of loneliness.

How can I help

Growing up, I witnessed intense conflict between my parents, which made me highly sensitive to relational tension. Later in life, immigrating to a new country brought loneliness and uncertainty, shaping my understanding of how stress and transition can impact relationships.

Through my own experiences and my journey in psychotherapy, both as a learner and a client, I have come to understand that many relationship struggles are not about being right or wrong, and they do not mean that love has faded. Often, conflict arises from unmet needs for security, feeling heard, and emotional closeness. I also learned how stress from adapting to a new culture can amplify fear, frustration, and reactive behaviors, which can unintentionally drive partners apart and repeat the negative cycles we may have witnessed growing up.

I help individuals and couples navigate challenges such as feeling alone in their relationship, coping with identity shifts and losses after immigration, or growing apart as they adjust differently to a new culture. In couples therapy, I support clients in identifying the emotional patterns that shape their interactions, expressing underlying needs and vulnerabilities, and responding to each other in ways that foster safety and connection.

My approach

My therapeutic style is warm, curious, and reflective. I work from a client-centred and strength-based perspective, meaning I see clients as the experts of their own experiences, even when things feel confusing or overwhelming.

My primary approach is Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), an evidence based approach that helps individuals and couples recognize the underlying emotions driving conflicts and supports them in creating stronger emotional connection. Whether you are an individual longing for a healthy relationship, or a couple who feels stuck in repeated conflicts despite trying many ways to resolve them, I am here to listen and help you experience the joy and fulfillment that come from a deeply connected relationship.

More about me

Outside of therapy, I lead a psychology-based book club, where I enjoy thoughtful conversations about human experience, meaning, and connection.

I value connection deeply, both with people and with nature. During my free time, I enjoy swimming, rock climbing, painting, cooking, and playing the violin. These self care practices  help me rejuvenate and stay inspired.
