Premartial Counselling

Building a Strong Foundation for Your Future Together

Congratulations on taking the next step toward marriage or a long-term commitment! This exciting time is also an important opportunity to strengthen your relationship and prepare for a fulfilling future together.

Are you concerned about navigating cultural or religious differences with your partner? Do you want to develop effective strategies for discussing important topics like finances or family planning? Are you worried about how in-law dynamics might impact your relationship? If so, premarital counselling can be incredibly beneficial for you and your partner.

What is Premarital Counselling?

Premarital counselling is a proactive approach designed to help couples build a strong, lasting relationship. This short-term counselling focuses on equipping couples with essential relationship skills, identifying strengths, and addressing potential challenges to create a solid foundation for the future. The key goals of premarital counselling include:

  • Exploring relationship strengths and areas for growth

  • Strengthening communication skills

  • Identifying stressors and learning conflict management

  • Addressing family dynamic issues

  • Engaging in open conversations about sex and intimacy

  • Setting personal, couple, and family goals

  • Blended families in which couples are bringing children from previous relationships into a new marriage.

How Can Premarital Counselling Benefit You and Your Partner?

What to Expect in Premarital Counselling

At Relationship Counseling Toronto, we utilize the Prepare-Enrich program, a well-researched and highly validated tool specifically designed for premarital counselling. This program is based on systems theory and the Couple and Family Strengths Model.

  1. Online Assessment: Each partner completes the Prepare-Enrich Online Assessment individually (at a cost of approximately $35 USD per person). This assessment, which includes around 200 questions, gauges satisfaction levels in 12 relationship categories, such as personality, relationship dynamics, commitment levels, family relationships, spiritual beliefs, and more. The assessment generates a detailed report highlighting your relationship’s strengths and areas for growth.

  2. Feedback Session: Couples meet with a therapist to review the Prepare-Enrich report and discuss key insights.

  3. Counselling Sessions: Couples attend weekly or bi-weekly premarital counselling sessions, typically 8–10 sessions depending on individual needs.
